Roaming in Canada - Coast-to-Coast Coverage

Population covered: 94% by GSM, 84% by HSPA and expanding daily.

When you travel in Canada on the Rogers network you will only incur Long Distance charges (no Roaming charges).

If traveling to an area in Canada where there is no Rogers roaming coverage (such as Dryden, Ontario or the North West Territories), the rates for Roaming on another wireless service provider’s network will vary.

Roaming Outside of Canada

As soon as you leave Canada and enter a new country/area your device will automatically switch onto one of the wireless network providers in your destination. You will receive a welcome message from Rogers with some helpful information.

Voicemail: Roaming charges apply when retrieving your voice messages from your wireless phone while you are roaming. Voice messages that are deposited in your voice mailbox do not incur any roaming charges.

Text Messaging¹: While roaming internationally, you can receive text messages from home and send messages back to Canada, the U.S. or over 210 countries around the world. While roaming, text messages are 75¢ per message sent. Text messages received while roaming are 15¢ per message, unless you have purchased a Travel Pack or are subscribed to a text messaging plan or bundle (premium messages not included).

¹ There is no guarantee of delivery within a specific period of time. There is also a slight risk that your message may not be delivered, as many factors may contribute to delivery options. Messages not delivered after 72 hours will be deleted.

Data Roaming (for Mobile Internet, Email, Instant Messaging, Applications)

In the U.S., you can use applications that use data just as you would at home from your Web-enabled wireless device.

For international destinations, data usage is available in select locations. For Data usage to work a network in the destination area needs to support GPRS network roaming. There may be instances when minimal data roaming charges will be incurred even when there has been no user-initiated data activity. This is attributed to the data devices, particularly "smartphones", as they interact automatically with the data network to update and synchronize your data services on a near real-time basis (i.e. to check for new email messages). To avoid incurring any data charges while roaming, you can turn data roaming off right from your phone (see your phones user manual).

Emergency Calls While Roaming

Global networks around the world will recognize either 9-1-1 or 1-1-2 as the number to reach emergency services.

Roaming to Japan and Korea

If travelling to Korea and Japan, only Rogers devices that support 3G/HSPA at the 2100 MHz frequency will allow for automatic roaming. Some popular devices include the BlackBerry 9000, iPhone 3G, HP iPaq 910c, Sony Experia X1, Novatel MC950D USB modem, ZTE MF636 USB modem.

If your device does not support 3G/HSPA at the 2100 MHz frequency, you will be required to rent a handset at a Korean or Japanese airport and to transfer your SIM into the rental device. For more information, please click here.

Roaming With Your iPhone

iPhone devices are preset to turn wireless data roaming off while travelling outside Canada. To turn data on while roaming, click on Network and then beside Data Roaming select ON.

If you have Visual Voicemail for your iPhone, this feature uses data and will also be turned off when you roam unless you turn Data Roaming on. If you turn Data Roaming on, you will incur data charges for Visual Voicemails sent to your device (whether you listen to your messages or not) while travelling outside Canada. Alternatively, you can also access your voicemail while roaming by pressing and holding 1 on your iPhone and entering your password (the default password if you have not yet set up your voicemail service is the last 4 digits of your wireless phone number).

While travelling in Canada on the Rogers network you will not incur data charges for Visual Voicemails received as these are zero-rated.

Pay As You Go Roaming

Ensure that your device is compatible with the GSM network frequency of the country you will be visiting. Please note your GSM phone or wireless hand-held must operate on a country's listed frequency in order to make or receive calls.

Roaming is available in the U.S with any Rogers GSM device. Local & international calling will be billed at $2.00/minute. Text messages will be billed at 60¢/message sent and 15¢/message received. Device browsing rate is 0.05¢/page viewed.

Note:
Roaming usage is charged on a per minute basis and is rounded up to the next minute. All charges are billed directly to your Rogers Wireless account in Canadian funds. In unusual circumstances, calls may appear on your invoice up to 120 days after they were made. Data services are offered on a 'per-Operator' basis in countries where data roaming is available. This means your device may not automatically find an operator providing data services. In that case you will have to use the manual selection option (see user guide for your device) to find the operator(s) offering this service. Rates are subject to change.
